It is estimated that depression claims about 39,000 lives per year. The effects of this disease are incalculable. However, in the United States, a stigma exists regarding those suffering from depression.

The Mathis family lost their daughter Katie when she was only 21-years-old after a battle with depression. Since that time, they began developing a team-based-care facility to help those ailing from mental illnesses. This institution will be the only one of its kind in Manhattan, Kansas. The goal of 'Katie's Way' is to offer help to young adults in a crises situation, in a non-institutional setting. The Mathis family hopes to help others understand the disease and provide better treatment outcomes. This is the story of Katie, mental illness, and family.

"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle."
